TODAY move into the danger zone. You may want to prepare yourself with some deep breathing or other centering activity. Go as far as you can into your dangerous images: list some of the most horrible, hideous thoughts you ever had, or describe one in detail. When you are finished draw a box or circle around the words to contain them. If you must, tear up the page or delete the file.
Fruits of the Forbidden (Eating the Apple)
I ndulging in what is forbidden is delicious. The temptation creates passion, the anticipation is thrilling: the heart races, breath quickens, the mind becomes one-pointed, the senses attuned like a wild animal hunting prey—anxiety mounts at the thought of being found out, guilt and the giddiness of freedom pump through your temples. These are the fruits of the forbidden.
The forbidden is not exactly the same as the dangerous. Often the forbidden is perceived as dangerous, but the essence of forbidden is that an authority is imposing a prohibition on the act. The power relationship this sets up stokes our desire to challenge authority and risk the behavior on several levels: personal, familial, and societal. This is one of the oldest stories written and told. It is the story of Eve and the Apple, Prometheus stealing fire from the gods, Frankenstein.
When something is forbidden it becomes more desirable. As a teenager, I was forbidden to ride on motorcycles. I’ll always savor the first time I put on a helmet, swung my leg over the back seat, grabbed the denim-bound, bony hips of a college sophomore, and whipped down the FDR Drive.
